James Vince again flattered to deceive on the big stage.

The Hampshire captain failed to build on a good start and two successful reviews before departing for 18 on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand.

Batting at number three to accommodate Joe Root’s return to his favoured sport at four -after Alastair Cook (2) had his off stump spectacularly uprooted by Trent Boult in the third over – Vince’s third flirtation with the review system ended in his dismissal.

Vince survived a review of his own and one for New Zealand, but was unable to overturn when Tim Southee (5-60) had him lbw with one which satisfied umpire’s call - just hitting the top of leg-stump.

He had hit Boult (3-79) for successive fours and stroked Southee for another.

Joe Root (37) put on 55 with Mark Stoneman (35) for the third wicket after England lost the toss.

But New Zealand reduced the tourists to 94-5 before Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood rescued England with priceless half-centuries.

Bairstow (97 not out) found unexpected assistance from number nine Wood (52) for a stand of 95 in 18 overs as England recovered to 290-8 at stumps.

l Fidel Edwards was restricted to a solitary wicket as the MCC beat county champions Essex in Barbados.

The Hampshire fast bowler took 17-5-45-1 and 9-0-42-0 as MCC won by an innings and 34 runs.
