JIMMY Adams admits this is likely to be his last season as a Hampshire player.

The veteran opener made an unbeaten 182 in the rain-affected friendly against Cardiff MCCU, the last day of which was rained off yesterday, ahead of Friday’s opening Specsavers County Championship match against Worcestershire.

Then the 37 year-old admitted this is probably his last season.

Adams said: “I’ll have a better idea halfway through the season but it probably is - unless I channel a bit of Kumar Sangakkara!

“If that does happen maybe I can go again. I’ll play it by ear but I’m at ease with whatever happens whereas for a number of years I’ve feared it coming to an end and put myself under additional pressure. I’m at peace either way.”

Adams, who is in the last year of his contract, hopes to go into coaching or teaching when his playing career ends.

In the meantime he is looking to add to the 13,522 first-class runs he has made at just over 38 apiece.

Another 1,200 this season would see him break into Hampshire’s top 20 of all-time run scorers.

Adams, above, was ‘grateful for butter fingers from the students’ during his 182.

“I didn’t make many (three and 19) against them last season so it’s good to get runs behind me and spend some time in the middle,” he said.

“Hopefully I’ll make the team for the first part of the year. On paper it’s as strong a Hampshire squad as I can remember.

“As well as being very good players, Sam [Northeast] and Hashim [Amla] seem like very good people to add to the pot.”

Hampshire made 417-4 on Saturday, in the 83 overs that were possible during what was supposed to be a three-day game.

Days two and three were complete washouts but Adams at least faced 242 balls, hitting 26 fours and four sixes.

He shared an opening stand of 37 with Joe Weatherley (27) before Rilee Rossouw (61) and Sean Ervine (65no) hit half-centuries.

Sam Northeast made 28 on his Hampshire debut and Liam Dawson 13.

Adams’ 182 is the 24th century of his first-class career and his highest score since August 2014.
