BASINGSTOKE and North Hants are about to experience their first taste of ‘white ball’ competitive Sunday cricket with Weybridge visiting May’s Bounty tomorrow (1.30pm) for the first of four Serious Cricket Challenge matches.

The Bountymen will wear their familiar blue and gold pyjama kit and play against black sightscreens in a series of Sunday afternoon games which will see Finchampstead, Richmond and Falkland also visit the Bounty in the coming weeks.

Organiser David Price explained: “Serious Cricket and ourselves are working together to try to bring back some more competitive Sunday cricket and we’ve lined up a series of attractive games, which we hope the players and local spectators will support.”

To ensure there’s a competitive edge to the 45-over games, Dummer-based sponsors Serious Cricket will award a £250 equipment voucher to each winning team.

Basingstoke captain Mitch Stokes is hoping all his current first team squad, excluding the globe trotting Will Phillips, will make themselves available.

“We are looking for promotion into Premier Division and, if that’s achieved, we will be playing white ball cricket on a regular basis next summer, so it’s important we familiarise ourselves with it,” he said.

“David has lined up a series of attractive matches for four of the next five Sundays, so let’s hope everyone supports the venture.”
