BASINGSTOKE and North Hants booked their place in the second round of the Southern League T20 Cup, after beating visiting Ventnor by 22 runs.

Home skipper Mitch Stokes won the toss and decided to bat and they soon found themselves 22-2 with Dan Belcher (4) and Stokes (10) back in the pavilion.

David Griffiths promoted to opener and Will Phillips (14) moved the score to 56, before Phillips departed having hit the first six of the innings.

The mantle was then taken up by Griffiths and Joe Oates (54) as the pair added 57 for the fifth wicket.

Griffiths' innings of 44 from 43 balls, which included five fours, was ended as he was bowled by Schaughan van Greunen.

Oates continued to keep the scoreboard ticking with a little help from Chris Jolley (9) which included the second six of the innings and Ashley Neal (11 not out) with the third maximum.

Oates' fine half century was ended after he was run out and in his 35 balls, he hit 11 fours as Basingstoke finished on 153-7 from their 20 overs.

In Ventnor's reply, they quickly lost opener Rob Snell bowled by Ashley Neal for one, but the home bowlers kept things tight with Neal (1-18) and Stokes (1-14) setting the tone.

Jamie Miller (39) top scored as most of the top order got starts, but failed to make a match winning score.

Late on Bradley Neal snapped up a couple of wickets from his two overs at the cost of 13 runs, as the Isle of Wight side finished on 131-6.

The victory sees Bountymen, join Hartley Wintney and Hook and Newnham Basics in the second round of the competition, with the draw yet to be made.
