Mason Crane could become Hampshire's youngest-ever England player after being included in a 16-man International T20 squad with county teammate Liam Dawson.

Like Dawson last year, Crane could make his England debut on home turf as the three-match series against South Africa begins at The Ageas Bowl a week on Wednesday.

Crane, who turned 20 in February, is one of five uncapped players in the England squad and will replace Danny Briggs as Hampshire's youngest international if he plays next week.

Chairman of selectors James Whitaker said: “Young leg-spinner Mason Crane is another player with great promise and he has made great strides with Hampshire this season and has added to his experience with stints in the North-South Series earlier in the season, where he took crucial wickets and even earned selection for New South Wales in Australia’s premier domestic competition the Sheffield Shield.”

England squad: Bairstow (Yorkshire)*, Billings (Kent), Buttler (Lancashire), Crane (Hampshire), Tom Curran (Surrey),  Dawson (Hampshire), Hales (Nottinghamshire), Jordan (Sussex), Livingstone (Lancashire), Malan (Middlesex), Morgan (Middlesex, captain), Craig Overton (Somerset)**, Plunkett (Yorkshire), Roy (Surrey), Willey (Yorkshire), Wood (Durham)***.
