BASINGSTOKE and North Hants made it two wins out of two in the Southern League Division One with a 53 run victory over visiting Calmore Sports.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat, but soon lost opener Joe Oates with just 11 on the board.

Calmore’s opening bowler Steve Wright then struck again to remove Dan Belcher (14).

Chris Oliver (32) and Will Phillips moved the score to 86, being parted after Oliver was trapped leg before by Mark Lavelle.

Phillips continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, as Dean Nurse and Mitch Stokes had brief stays at the centre.

With the score on 103-5, the home side needed a big partnership and it duly arrived thanks to Phillips and player/coach Dave Griffiths.

Phillips’ knock of 79 was finally ended by a catch from Tom Pegler which gave Mike West his first of two wickets in the game Phillips’ stay at the crease lasted 80 balls and 11 of these he hit for fours.

Griffiths and Martyn James then took on the attack with both batsmen hitting sixes.

The player/coach was the last man out for an excellent 71, which came from just 56 balls and also saw nine fours.

In the end Basingstoke posted a total of 241-8 after their 50 overs.

The Calmore reply got off to the worst possible start as Mitch Stokes (3-28) bowled Mark Lavelle first ball.

Fellow opener Tamlyn Goodrich (11) lasted a little longer, but at 17-2 they already looked in trouble.

Wickets continue to fall as Martyn James and Ryan Connor joined the party as Calmore slipped to 63-5.

A couple of dismissals from spin king Matt Thankachan (2-42) kept the pressure up as the visitors reached 85-7.

It was left to Ben Johns with a century and Liam Newton (39) to add nearly 100 runs to the score in an excellent eighth wicket stand.

However, it proved not to be enough as the visitors finished on 188-8.

The Bountymen will be hoping to make it three wins out of three, when they visit Sarisbury Athletic next weekend.

Today they are action at Havant in a Club Championship clash.
