HAMPSHIRE new boy Ian Holland took five wickets on the first day of the Second Eleven Championship match against Essex at The Ageas Bowl.

The Australian all-rounder, who impressed on his first-team debut in the Royal London One-Day Cup win against Kent at Canterbury two weeks ago, finished with 5-46 from 18.3 overs as Essex were bowled out for 349 (82.3 overs).

Batting at no 3, Holland then made 11 not out to help captain Will Smith (23no), who won the toss, guide Hampshire to 50-1 by the close.

Fidel Edwards (13-4-47-1) took the early wicket of Essex star Dan Lawrence, who he bowled for 28.

But it was Holland who took four of the first five wickets to fall, including that of Kishen Velani (50).

The only other Essex batsman to reach fifty was James Stamatis, who was unfortunate to be stranded on 99 (124 balls, 16 fours), when Holland dismissed the visitors’ No 11 for a duck.

Off-spinner Brad Taylor (17-3-60-3) took three of the last four wickets, including the eighth to break a 100-run partnership.

All-rounder Asher Hart (13-1-57-1), who opened the bowling with Edwards, took the other wicket to fall.

Scottish international Chris Sole (10-2-46-0), Josh McCoy (10-0-69-0) and Smith (1-0-11-0) also bowled for Hampshire.

Smith also took three catches, including two off Taylor, before adding 24 in six overs with Holland after academy product Ben Duggan (six) was out in the tenth over of the reply.
