James Vince and Liam Dawson have been left out of England's squad for next week's one-off NatWest Twenty20 at Old Trafford.

Dawson impressed on his international debut in England's last T20 match, taking 3-27 in an eight-wicket win against Sri Lanka at The Ageas Bowl two months ago.

Vince also played in that game and he and Dawson were both in England's World T20 squad.

But Joe Root, Moeen Ali and Alex Hales - who were all rested for that match - are in the 14-man squad so England are likely to field a similar side to that which lost the WT20 final against the West Indies in April.

Durham pair Ben Stokes and Mark Wood, also already in the squad for the ongoing one-day internationals, are both predictably back too - having recently recovered from their respective calf and ankle injuries.

But there is no first international call-up yet for young batsman Ben Duckett, as had been mooted in some quarters - while Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow also miss out.

Vince and Dawson's omission is perhaps the most surprising, after his inclusion in the squad which made it to the ICC World Twenty20 final last spring.

He has since lost form in a maiden Test summer, however, while Bairstow has been left out of England's successful ODI team against Pakistan despite his outstanding form as a wicketkeeper-batsman.

England are unbeaten in white-ball cricket this summer, and national selector James Whitaker is hoping to see further evidence of the strides made in Twenty20.

"It is excellent to see the progress we are making in white-ball cricket across both formats," he said.

"The IT20 international against Pakistan will give the squad another opportunity to measure their development.

"The squad has an exciting feel with exceptional talent throughout."

He welcomes especially the returns of Stokes and Wood, the latter with only a solitary T20 cap to his name as yet.

"Both are world-class players and are an important part of our long-term plans to become the best side in the world," said Whitaker.

"It is testament to the excellent work being nurtured in the county structure and through the England Lions that there is a depth of quality pushing the nucleus of the current group."

England have also announced that national team coaches Paul Farbrace and Ottis Gibson will take charge of the opposing teams in next spring's inaugural North v South matches in the United Arab Emirates.

Trevor Bayliss' assistant Farbrace will manage the South team, and bowling coach Gibson the North, in three 50-over matches in mid-March - involving players who have qualified to stake a claim for next summer's Champions Trophy squads via the Professional Cricketers' Association MVP rankings.
