HAMPSHIRE responded to Michael Carberry’s shock news in the best way possible – with a much-needed win.

The players had the awful news of Carberry’s cancer diagnosis broken to them by the former England batsman as they prepared for their Natwest T20 Blast match against Glamorgan at The Ageas Bowl.

But Liam Dawson responded with an unbeaten 76 (54 balls, four fours, two sixes), his maiden T20 fifty, as Hampshire made 167-6 - before taking 4-23 as the high-flying visitors were beaten by 25 runs, writes Simon Walter.

Hampshire were 24-3 after losing the toss as Graham Wagg struck twice in three balls to see off left-handers Tom Alsop and Sean Ervine before catching Adam Wheater, who had been promoted to open.

But Dawson’s response was typical of the tenacious England international.

After putting on 46 in six overs with Shahid Afridi, he saw Hampshire’s overseas star depart for a brilliant 25 to an outstanding catch by a diving Wagg at mid-off, just when it looked like the Glamorgan star might leave it to a teammate.

Step forward Joe Weatherley, who produced a 28-ball 43, his highest senior score. Weatherley is an outstanding prospect, particularly in the longer form of the game, and showed his talent in the shorter form during a stand of 78 in nine overs with Dawson. Both hit two sixes apiece.

Dawson, who was grateful for a dropped catch at short fine leg on 29 off Craig Meschede, hit the seamer for thre fist of his maximums over mid-wicket and Michael Hogan for another.

In between, Weatherley showed what he is capable with sweetly struck sixes over mid-wicket and mid-on in taking 21 off five Wagg deliveries.

He was bowled attempting a third off the next delivery, but after taking 16 off the last four balls of the innings from Hogan, Dawson maintained the momentum with the ball.

Glamorgan raced to 49-0 from their six-over powerplay, but Dawson followed an excellent first over from Shahid Afridi with the wickets of David Lloyd with his first ball and Colin Ingram with his fifth.

After the excellent Aridi bowled Aneurin Donald, Brad Taylor celebrated his first senior T20 scalp, and a notable one at that, when Glamorgan captain Jacques Rudolph prodded a simple return catch against the off-spinner’s second ball.

Mark Wallace drove straight to cover in Taylor’s next over, and an unlikely 60 were needed from 24 balls when Meschede was well caught by Weatherley at mid-on. It was all over soon after a show of dissent from Wagg.
