HOOK and Newnham Basics made it two away wins on the trot after a 71-run victory in the north Hampshire derby at Andover in the Southern League Division.

The visitors put into bat by the home side, made them pay, as they scored 269-5 and then bowled the home side out for 198.

Returning Ben Thane (66) led the run charge for Hook and along with fellow opener Kieran Thomson (25) they made a solid start.

Jordan Hobday (61) and captain Matt Love (56) kept the scoreboard ticking over at London Road, as the visitors reached 269-5 from their 50 overs.

Babu Veettil was the most successful Andover bowler with two wickets, but at a price as he conceded 72 runs.

The home side’s reply started well thanks to openers Ali Hooper (54) and Glyn Treagus (46), but the introduction of spinner Kevin Poulter (2-16) saw him dismiss both.

After this, Andover found life hard with the bat as Rhodes Franklin (4-41) and the return of Shane Brewer (2-44) took out most of the middle order.

Three of them Will Arnold (15), Matt Knight (13) and Max Souter (14) all made double figures.

It was left to number nine Mike Adams (19) to score some late runs, but it was all in vain as Andover were bowled out for 198.

Next in the league for Hook is a home game against Bournemouth, while today they are away to Totton and Eling in the first round of the T20 Cup.
