HARTLEY Wintney skipper Danny Plume was a disappointed man, after his side lost their home opener in the Southern League Division Two to visiting Calmore Sports by 115 runs.

After the game, Plume said: “I felt we bowled well and certainly 262, was a score we could have chased down.

“At 91-2 we were in a good position, but we then found ourselves 100-5 and this proved to be the turning point of the game.”

The visitor’s won the toss and elected to bat and made a solid start, losing just the one wicket in the first 10 overs, as opener Mark Lavelle (8) was caught behind by Richard Hill off the bowling of Scott Baldwin.

Thomas Garwood took the next wicket, as he trapped Ben Johns leg before, with the score on 45.

Ben Moss (30) and opener Tamlyn Goodrich added 70 for third wicket, before Moss went leg before off the bowling of Dev Buttar.

Calmore continued to build excellent partnerships as Ben Perry (30) and Goodrich shared 80 for the fourth wicket.

Perry was then caught by Will Ross, which gave Patrick Joseph (3-55), his first wicket on his Hartley debut.

This left the visitors on 195-4 and this was soon 198-6, as Matt Hardy (1) was run out by Garwood and then Goodrich’s superb innings of 99, was ended as he was caught by Garwood, as Joseph snapped up his second wicket.

With wickets in hand in the final 10 overs, the visiting batsmen started to chance their arm and Paul Proudley (13) hit two sixes in a four ball stay, before he was bowled by Joseph (3-13).

Calmore went on to make 262-8 from their 50 overs, as Mike West finished unbeaten on 31, while James Rose was caught behind off the last ball of the innings.

The Hartley reply started like the visitors, as they reached 35-1 off the first 10 overs with Garwood (4) the first man out trapped leg before by Steve Wright.

Fellow opener Matt Kerr (29) joined him in the pavilion with the score on 53, the first of three wickets for Mike West.

This brought Baldwin to the centre and he survived a strong appeal first ball for lbw.

Then along with Plume, the pair moved the home side into a good position as they reached 91-2.

However, the game was turned on its head by two quick wickets, as Plume was caught by Ben Moss and Baldwin was snapped up by a caught and bowled by spinner James Rose (3-36).

Hartley were further rocked as Richard Hill was bowled by Mark Lavelle (3-17) as they reached 100-5.

Patrick Joseph (28) and Will Ross (10) looked to have kick started the innings again, as Joseph sent sixes to opposite ends of the ground in consecutive overs.

He was then harshly given out leg before and from 127-5, the home side crumbled as they were all out for 147, as Lavelle, Rose and West ripped through the tail.

Hartley are on their travels next weekend, with a trip to fourth placed Hambledon.

Chris Saville, who missed the Calmore defeat due to injury, is expected to return to the line-up.
