James Vince paid tribute to James Taylor after his former England Lions captain's shock retirement.

Vince, who also made his England debut under Taylor last year, was stunned by the news that the 26 year-old Nottinghamshire star can no longer player due to a heart defect.

The Hampshire captain said: “It has been extremely sad. It is never nice when news like that comes out especially for someone who is so dedicated and hard working for the sport.

“To have it taken away like that is heart-breaking.

“He has always been an excellent performer and his numbers have been excellent.

"He had the world ahead of him in terms of international cricket and an extremely sad day.”

After making his sixth Ageas Bowl hundred, Warwicklshire captain Ian Bell said: “It is immensely sad. We couldn’t believe it when we were told.

"Thoughts are with Titch and a speedy recovery. He is one of the top blokes in English cricket and I know [Chris] Woakes is very close and really upset. It is shocking news.”
