It had to be escorted back to its owner by a Cardiff UCCE fielder during the 52.4 overs that were possible.

Cardiff declared 111 runs behind on their overnight score of 258-9, before Hampshire made 126-4 from 30.4 overs, setting the students an unlikely 238 to win.

What play their was also featured runs for captain Sean Ervine (31), Ryan McLaren (27), Chris Wood (35) and Mason Crane, whose unbeaten 24 goes down as the 19 year-old’s highest first-class score.

New-ball bowler James Turpin dismissed makeshift Hampshire openers Ervine and McLaren in the space of three overs before Crane helped Wood add 53.

When Wood became the seventh victim of the match for off-spinner Alex Thomson, Ervine declared.

Crane, one of five Hampshire players to record first-class bests with the bat in this match - alongside Joe Weatherley (83), Tom Alsop (82), McManus (68) and Brad Taylor (36) - trapped Cardiff captain Brad Scriven (23) and finished with match figures of 4-89.

Stumps were drawn with Cardiff 79-1.
