HOOK and Newnham Basics will be hoping to end their their excellent season by picking up some silverware this weekend.

Matt Love’s men face Rotherfield Park in the final of the Finch Group Guy Jewell Cup at May’s Bounty on Sunday (4pm).

Hook will look to put the disappointment of missing out on the Southern League Division One title behind them and get their hands on a trophy they have won many times before.

There is certain to be a big crowd for the game, swelled by Hook supporters making the short trip to the home of Basingstoke and North Hants.

However, the final is not going to be a walkover as opponents Rotherfield Park are made up of players from Southern League Premier Division side Alton.

They have already beaten Eversley and Hartley Wintney on their way to a first final.

Hook made it into Sunday’s showpiece by knocking out holders Yateley in the semi final, winning by 24 runs.

That game saw an excellent performance with both bat and ball from Ben Thane as he top scored with 45 runs and took 3-20.

Hook are set to be at full strength, so all of their explosive batsmen will be on show.

Captain Matt Love is looking forward to the encounter: “We are disappointed to finish second in the league, so it would be nice to win a trophy to cap off our season.

“We imagine Rotherfield are going to be a strong team, which means it is going to be a tough game between two very good sides, which should make it an exciting final to play in.”

The Guy Jewell Cup final is the second game at May’s Bounty on Sunday. Before it there will be the final of the Cyril Thompson Plate, which is for sides knocked out of the cup in the first round.

Hook will finish second in Southern League Division One, whatever happens on Saturday, but they are keen to end their campaign with a win.

Hook lost last week’s title decider against visiting New Milton by 77 runs and travel to face relegation-threatened Totton & Eling on Saturday.

When these sides met earlier in the season it was a high-scoring affair. Kieran Thomson scored 157 as Hook racked up 333-9 and Totton did well in their reply, reaching 296-5.

Looking ahead to his side’s final game of the season, Hook captain Matt Love said: “We want to go out and enjoy our last game.

“I hope the bowlers take wickets and the batsman get runs. We want to end with a win after losing our last two games.”
