Hampshire debutant Mason Crane took his first first-class wicket as Durham were bowled out for 421 at The Ageas Bowl this afternoon.

The leg-spinner struck in the fourth over after lunch when John Hastings was bowled as he tried to hit the 18 year-old across the line.

Liam Dawson claimed his 100th first-class wicket six balls later, when Gordon Muchall, having escaped a stumping on 38, was finally dimissed, caught at short leg by Will Smith for 145 (297 balls, 16 fours).

Dawson completed the Durham innings in his next over when Graham Onions was caught at mid-on.

Gareth Berg took the only wicket to fall during the morning session after Durham began day two on 278-6.

Arshad (60)  proved an invaluable partner as he and Muchall added 128 for the seventh wicket before eventually edging Berg, whio had dropped him on 0, to James Vince at first slip.

Hampshire will begin day three on 119-3, 302 behind, with Michael Carberry still there on 57.

Jimmy Adams (five) was unfortunate to be given lbw by Chris Rushworth.

Dawson (nine) mis-hit Hastings to mid-off and Vince (19), in his first game since replacing Adams as captain, edged Ryan Pringle’s off-spin to slip.

But former Durham batsman Will Smith (27no) put on 51 in 18 overs with Carberry before rain ensured an early finish.

Hampshire bowling: Bird 29-7-105-3,  Tomlinson 25-8-71-2, Berg 22-5-61-1, Dawson 28.5-6-70-3, Crane 24-4-75-1, Carberry 2-1-5-0, Smith 1-0-8-0.
