HAMPSHIRE new boy Andre Adams is a doubt for the opening LV County Championship match of the season.

The 39-year-old was planning to prepare for Hampshire’s first Championship match against Sussex a week on Sunday by playing in Auckland’s last first-class match of New Zealand’s domestic season.

But the former Nottinghamshire star, who has been signed as a Championship specialist for the first ten matches, may not be available until the second match, against Warwickshire at Edgbaston on April 19.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White explained: “Andre’s had an injection on an elbow so we’re slightly concerned about him.

“It’s just a bit uncomfortable when he bowls and the injection’s to make sure he’s clear of any pain.”

Adams is due to arrive after Hampshire’s opening first-class match of the season, the three-day friendly against Loughborough UCCE that begins at the Ageas Bowl today (11am start).

“The only concern is he hasn’t got overs in his legs, like the other guys,” continued White.

“But he’s around for the lion’s share of the Championship season.

“He can set us up well in those first three months – and hopefully he’ll play in Tuesday’s friendly against Kent.”

Hampshire are also without Jackson Bird for the Easter friendly against Loughborough UCCE.

But Gareth Berg will make his first-class Hampshire debut against a Loughborough team that includes Basil Akram, a 22 year-old seamer on a Hampshire development contract who played two 50-over matches for the county last season.

White added: “We’re playing our strongest side batting line up so hopefully they get the time in the middle they need.

“Most of our bowlers have had the preparation they need but it would be nice to get into a situation where the batters have runs under their belt.

“The weather will dictate that but I guess every other side has the same issues.”
