Hampshire begin the third and final phase of pre-season today - ahead of Surrey’s visit this weekend.

After beginning their 2015 preparations in the indoor school, the squad has returned from their Barbados tour – which included a T20 tournament and two-day friendlies against Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire – ready to practise in English conditions with the opening game less than three weeks away.

Captain Jimmy Adams’ 97 against Notts was Hampshire’s highest individual score in Barbados and the bowlers ended a productive fortnight by dismissing Warwickshire for 173 on Saturday.

Chris Wood took five wickets and there were two apiece for James Tomlinson and Basil Akram, one of three seamers on a development contract.

South African seamer Bradley Wheal and former England U19 left-armer Tom Barber, who took 3-56 against Notts, also impressed, while new signing Gareth Berg continued his preparations a year after his last appearance for Middlesex.

“It was an excellent two weeks, all the batters got time at the crease and the bowlers got lots of overs under their belts,” said director of cricket Giles White. “The highlight was probably the bowling performance against a strong Warwickshire side. It was good to see the bowlers bowl so well as a group at this time of year.

“Woody picked up five wickets but all the figures were good and it was good to see the younger bowlers do well.

“They all bowled with good accuracy and pace. Bradley Wheal played in a number of games and fitted in very well.

“Basil swung the ball well after coming back from injury and Tom bowled with a lot of pace.

“All three have got the potential to be good first-class cricketers they’ve got lots of developing to do but things can happen quickly.”

New signings Jackson Bird and Andre Adams do not arrive until a week before the opening LV County Championship match against Sussex on April 12, but they could play in the last of the pre-season friendlies against Kent (April 7-8). Before then, Hampshire have friendlies against Surrey (March 28/29) and Loughborough UCCE (April 2-4).

Meanwhile, Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry made 23 in the MCC’s second innings against Yorkshire.

Carberry, who made 36 out of the MCC’s first-innings 221 in Abu Dhabi, contributed 23 before nicking Adam Lyth’s occasional off-spin to Tim Bresnan at first slip, following a second successive single figure score for Alastair Cook. Yorkshire won by nine wickets.
