Hampshire's new signing, seamer Jackson Bird, and former Rose Bowl star Kevin Pietersen impressed for Melbourne Stars as they smashed Sydney Thunder to boost their Twenty20 Big Bash finals hopes.

Pietersen took centre stage making an unbeaten 67 off 42 balls as Stars chased down Thunder's poor total of 106.

The 34-year-old reached 50 in just 27 balls and is now the top run scorer in the Big Bash competition.

He helped Melbourne beat Sydney Thunder by eight wickets. He has now scored 262 runs in six innings.

"I'm batting as well as ever. I've got rid of my knee pain," he said.

Meanwhile, Bird (2-15) was excellent again.

The 28-year-old is due to play for Hampshire during the first three months of the LV County Championship season.
