CYRIL Thompson, who sadly passed away in September, has been honoured by the renaming of the Guy Jewell Plate to the Cyril Thompson Plate from next season.

It is fitting that Thompson, a popular man in local cricket circles, has been given this recognition. He was involved with the Guy Jewell Cup for 62 years, first as a scorer and then as the co-organiser with his wife Rita from 1972.

He was also organiser of the Plate competition from its inception in 1986.

The two competitions are now run in tandem every season with the Plate being for sides knocked out of the cup in the first round. This gives every team a chance to win a trophy in the summer.

Helen Young, Guy Jewell’s daughter, is delighted with the name change, which honours Thompson’s tireless work for so many years.

Despite Cyril’s death, the Guy Jewell Cup and now the Cyril Thompson Plate will remain a big part of the north Hampshire cricket calendar as Bill Blake has taken over as organiser.

He will be helped by a small committee comprising of Derek Dicker, John Golding, Mike Stephens and Steve Rolfe for the coming season and plans are already in hand.

The new organiser has already written to all clubs who participated in 2014 and any sides wishing to take part in 2015 can do so by contacting Bill Blake via e-mail at william-blake@sky.com.
