Glenn Maxwell’s third Test appearance and his first for 20 months ended in another humiliating defeat for Australia.

Maxwell, having replaced Alex Doolan in one of two changes to the team beaten by 221 runs in the first Test, could not stop another heavy defeat as Pakistan thrashed Australia by a colossal 356 runs in Abu Dhabi, to claim a record-breaking 2-0 series win.

Batting at four in his first first-class match since making 85 on his LV County Championship debut for Hampshire against Worcestershire in June, Maxwell made a 28-ball 37 as Australia were bowled out for 261 in their first innings.

The 26-year-old, who may return to Hampshire for a third stint next season, batted at three in the second innings but was out for four as Australia were routed for 246.

Statistically, Australia’s series defeat – under the captaincy of former Hampshire batsman Michael Clarke – is their worst of all time.
