FIVE Basingstoke players past and present Rob Tambellini, Dan Murrells, Ben Edwards, Kurt Tyrell and Stuart Mogg helped the university ice hockey team Southampton Spitfires to double success.

The south coast side followed up success in a tier one competition with victory in a tier two competition.

Basingstoke Bison Mogg was captain of the team as this was officially his last chance to play for the university team, in his alumni year, unless he gets a job and can play as a staff member.

In the tier one competition the Spitfires opened up in great style with a 3-0 win over the Cardiff Redhawks and then Tyrell and Tambellini scored in a 2-2 draw with St Andrews Typhoons.

They followed this up with a 6-1 success over the Sheffield Bears and then a 5-0 victory against the Northumbria Kings.

In the semi-finals they played the Oxford University Blues and after the game ended 0-0 Mogg scored the winning penalty shot.

The final against St Andrews was just as close as again it was decided with a shoot-out with Zack Holeska scoring the game winning penalty shot.

In the Tier Two Checking Championship the Spitfires won the final 6-3 over Leeds Gryphons.

Mogg opened the scoring after 91 seconds as the first period ended 1-1. The Spitfires won the second session 4-2 as Mogg and Tyrell were among the scorers.

Southamppton sealed with the only goal of the final period.
