BASINGSTOKE Bison netminder Tomas Hiadlovsky set a new club record for the most assists in a season for a goalie, as the Herd won for the first time this season over the Guildford Flames.

The goalie picked up a helper on his side’s second goal in a 3-1 victory and took Hiadlovsky’s tally to five for the campaign, beating the previous best set by Stephen Foster of four.

The win was a great way for the Bison to start 2017 and they were still minus import Joe Rand and British forward Joe Miller for their trip to Surrey.

The Flames themselves were without Tuomas Santavuori and Matic Kralj, and just a minute into contest lost another of their foreign legion, as Marek Maslonka was helped off the ice, after a clean hit from Tomas Karpov.

The visitors then went onto dominate the opening 20 minutes with Ciaran Long and Tomas Karpov both testing former Bison goalie Dean Skinns, but it remained 0-0 at the buzzer.

The first penalty of the second session, saw Guildford’s captain Jez Lundin depart for slashing.

The Herd made the most of the extra man as Vanya Antonov and Rene Jarolin combined, which gave Long space to fire in with nice wrist shot at 24:51.

The home side replied with their own powerplay strike, after Matt Towalski was binned for tripping.

A great pass from Kevin Phillips saw Tom Duggan apply the finish just two minutes later.

The Bison again had more of the play in the period and a pass out from Hiadlovsky found Long and his cross was put away at close range by Antonov with three minutes left in the session.

The final period saw Antonov strike again as dived to touch home Kurt Reynolds’ pass to make it 3-1 at 46:21.

The Flames were then given a great chance to pull a goal back, as Derek Roehl and Grant Rounding both took penalties at 53:43.

However, despite the two man advantage the Bison defence stood firm and man of the match Hiadlovsky made a couple of good saves to deny Michal Satek and Jens Eriksson.

The victory moved the Bison back up to fourth and tonight (6pm) they are in action at second placed Milton Keynes Lightning.
