CAMERON Buckle and Sam Brooks scored on their Basingstoke Bison debuts, as the Herd beat a National Hockey League Select side 7-2.

The pair were two of five additions to the home side for this exhibition game, which also saw Josh Richards make his Bison debut, while for Paul Petts and Kyle Goddard it was their second outing for the Herd.

The visiting side was made up of players from the Cardiff Rage, Bracknell Hornets, Oxford City Stars, Swindon NIHL Wildcats and Wightlink Buccanners and also included former Bison players Graeme Bird and Brendan Baird.

It took the select side just 100 seconds to open the scoring as Wightlink import Blair Dubyk netted on the powerplay.

The home side hit back as Rene Jarolin converted a pass from Grant Rounding to beat Cardiff goalie Luke Takel.

Buckle then gave the Bison the lead with his strike, as he netted a rebound from a Brooks’ shot.

The Herd’s Dan Weller-Evans then made sure his side led at the first buzzer, as he saved from Jordan Powell from close range.

The second session saw the Bison further extend their lead, as man of the match Buckle turned provider for Brooks to score his debut goal.

Sam Stone was then denied by Weller-Evans, as his blue line blast could only find the goalie’s pads.

The Bison extended their advantage to 4-1 after Rounding’s shot hit the crossbar and Matt Towalski slotted home.

Then in the final minute of the second session, the Bison were awarded a penalty shot, which saw Kyle Goddard denied by man of the match Takel.

For the third period, former Bison man Bird took over from Takel in goal, but he had no chance as Dan Davies extended the home side’s lead, after good spade work from Joe Miller.

Daniel Lackey then made it 6-1 at 49:45 and soon after Richards went close with a nice feed from Miller.

The Herd’s seventh goal arrived four minutes from time as Joe Rand netted and the scoring was completed at 58:03 as Cardiff’s Dave Christian scored.

Tonight, the Bison return to league action on the road at the Peterborough Phantoms.

Last night’s five additions for the Herd are back in action with the Buffalo on Sunday March 5, when they entertain the Cardiff Rage.
