THE BASINGSTOKE Bison can secure the English Premier League title with a victory this evening over the Swindon Wildcats.

This was after an excellent 5-2 win at league champions the Telford Tigers last night.

In a hard hitting contest from the opening face-off both teams traded chances.

The first penalty arrived in the game at 14:43, but they came thick and fast after that until the first buzzer.

In total five penalties were called in the space of four minutes which included Tigers’ Biahoslav Novak being dismissed for head butting.

The Herd opened the match scoring on the powerplay thanks to a great strike from Ciaran Long.

The second session saw the reigning league champions start the better and man of the match Max Birbaer equalised for the home side at 21:38.

The Tigers then took the lead as Peter Szabo netted Daniel Rose’s rebound and then soon after Dan Davies was denied by Bison’s man of the match Tomas Hiadlovsky.

As the period wore on the visitors created more chances and Rene Jarolin levelled things at 37:38 and then within in a minute the Herd struck again as Joe Greener scored.

The final session was an even affair early on and after killing the final powerplay of the night, the Bison started to dominate.

They added a fourth goal to their tally from Ryan Watt as he beat Tom Murdy from distance.

With 65 seconds left in the contest, the home side pulled their goalie for the extra skater, but it was all in vain as Bison captain Aaron Connolly scored into the empty net to secure a 5-2 win.

The victory means the Herd have the chance to clinch their first league crown since 1993, with a win against the Swindon Wildcats this evening (5.30pm).

They were beaten last night 5-2 by the Bison’s only title rivals the Peterborough Phantoms and the Cambridgeshire side are in Bracknell tonight.
