BASINGSTOKE ice hockey trio Chrissy Newman, Natalie Aldridge and Leanne Ganney suffered final-day heartbreak as Great Britain missed out on promotion from World Championship Division Two.

Going into the final game of the tournament at Dumfries on Sunday, both Britain and opponents Kazakhstan had a 100 per cent record, having won their opening four games.

However, it was Kazakhstan who won the game 2-0 to take the gold medal and with it promotion to Division One.

All three Basingstoke girls scored during the tournament, with Newman in especially good form as she was the team’s leading goal scorer with six, one behind the top scorers in the tournament, Korea’s Jongah Park and Poland’s Karolina Pozniewska.

Newman’s feat did not go unnoticed as she was named GB’s player of the tournament and supporters’ club player of the tournament.

The home nation opened their campaign with an 8-1 success over New Zealand as Newman and Ganney both scored, while Aldridge picked up an assist.

The next game was a 3-1 win over Korea with all three goals being scored by Basingstoke players as Newman netted twice and Ganney got the other.

Game three of the tournament saw another resounding win, 8-1 against Croatia, as Newman helped herself to a hat-trick, while Aldridge also found the back of the net.

Two days later GB made it four wins out of four as they beat Poland 4-0, with Ganney among the scorers.

For all three players, the season is far from over and the trio will now return to club action with the Bracknell Queen Bees, hoping to help them to retain the Women’s League Premier Division title.
