BASINGSTOKE Buffalo suffered heartbreak in the final of the National Ice Hockey South One League Cup, as they lost 7-2 to pre-tournament favourites the Slough Jets at Oxford on Sunday night.

The Jets won the trophy thanks to four unanswered goals in the final period, after the game was in the balance at 3-2 at the end of the second session.

The Berkshire side opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but the Buffalo equalised through Matt Lawday, as he finished a move that involved man-of-the-match Greg Martyn and Sam Dollin.

The Jets went ahead again at 17:32 and made it 3-1 early in the second period.

The Buffalo closed the gap again as Paul Petts netted, assisted by Roberto Tambellini and Ben Edwards.

Slough took 58 seconds to add to their tally in the final period and three further goals won them the cup.

In the semi-final, the Buffalo came back from 2-0 down to beat the Peterborough Islanders.

The Buffalo were level by 25:11, after Petts converted a pass from Dollin and then Tambellini scored.

Goals from Lawday and Daniel Lackey secured the victory, while netminder Jordan Lawday picked up the man-of-the-match award.

The season is not over for the Buffalo as the South Two West leaders still have one league game left.

They travel to Cardiff on April 11, with their promotion play-offs set to start the week after.

Former Buffalo and Bison player Elliott Dewey helped Invicta Dynamos to victory in the National Ice Hockey South One Cup last weekend.

The Kent side drew the first leg 4-4 in Essex against the Chelmsford Chieftains, before winning the home leg 5-3 for a 9-7 aggregate win.
