BASINGSTOKE Bison have announced today they will retire Tony Redmond’s number 20 jersey, after the player announced his retirement from the game.

He becomes only the third player in the club’s history to be given this great accolade and the first British player, as the other two are Canadians Kevin Conway and Don Yewchin.

The popular Scottish-born forward first came to Basingstoke in 1992 to join his older brother Kenny, who was already at the team.

It proved to be a brilliant first season as the team won the league crown and Redmond was also part of the Bison’s Benson and Hedges Plate winning teams of 1999 and 2000.

He was also the Basingstoke Gazette Sports Personality of the Year in 2005.

The Scot was the first and still the only player to have made 500 league appearances for the club which were played over 14 seasons.

He is Basingstoke’s all-time leading British goal and points scorer.

A back injury has finally forced him to call time on his glittering career.

The Bison have yet to announce at which game Redmond’s shirt will be officially retired and his banner put up on the wall.
