SEVEN goals in the final period from Basingstoke Bison saw them cruise to a 10-1 victory, over Invicta Dynamos in their final home game in the English Challenge Cup.

The Herd iced just one import in Tomas Karpov, as Miroslav Vantroba was suspended, while Brits Joe Greener, Nicky Chinn, Matt Selby, Declan Balmer and Cameron Wynn were also missing.

Added to the line-up was a full forward line of Buffalo players in Ryan Sutton, Alex Sampford and Hallam Wilson.

They started the game and iced most of the game against Invicta’s top two lines and did not disappoint.

In an even opening 20 minutes, one of the best of early chances saw Sampford and Sutton combine and Wilson forced a save.

The Bison opened the scoring at 11:43 from man-of-the-match Grant Rounding, with a top corner strike.

Sampford then went close from an excellent Karpov feed, but Invicta levelled in the final minute of the session, as a lovely set-up from Juraj Huska saw Adam McNicoll score.

The second period, saw a superb performance from Invicta goalie Steve Nightingale, as he limited the home side to two goals.

The first came from a lovely flowing move, which involved Kurt Reynolds and Connolly and Rounding scored.

The second was from Karpov, as he netted from close range.

With two minutes left in the period, Invicta import Huska was dismissed, as he caught Rounding across the nose accidental with his stick.

The visitors killed off the five minute powerplay, but then the home side turned on a display of clinical finishing, as they scored seven times in 12 minutes.

Karpov deflected in a Ciaran Long blue line shot and then a Wilson’s pass from board saw Michael Wales score.

The goal also saw an assist for Sutton, which was his first-ever point for the Bison.

Long, playing on defence for this game, hammered home at 48:57 and then Karpov added the seventh with his hat-trick goal.

A shot from the lively Stuart Mogg led to Wales scoring again, before Invicta’s Charlie Phillips broke away, but failed to get his shot away.

Aaron Connolly netted his first of the game and the seventh goal on the night, for the Karpov, Rounding and Connolly forward line.

Wales wrapped up the scoring with his own hat-trick goal and then in the final minute a fine solo skate from Wilson saw him denied by Nightingale.

Former Bison defenceman Elliott Dewey was Invicta’s man-of-the-match.

Also yesterday, Herd trio Selby, Balmer and Wynn helped Great Britain under-20s to a 4-2 victory in their opening game of the World Championships against the Netherlands. There next game is later this morning against Lithuania.
