BASINGSTOKE RFC opened their 2016 home campaign, with a 33-0 defeat at the hands of Effingham and Leatherhead in London Two South West..
Next up for Stoke is a trip to Warlingham on Saturday, who beat them at Down Grange 33-10 earlier in the season.
Warlingham did not play last weekend, as their game at London Cornish was postponed.
Confidence was high in the Stoke camp ahead of the Effingham game after a good performance the week before away at KCS Boys.
However, they faced a visitors outfit, which included former England player Chris Sheasby at number eight.
His experience was certainly a telling factor in helping Effingham complete a league double over Stoke.
For parts of the game it was really promising to see Stoke have the upper hand.
They kept hold of the ball well through the forwards, played some good phases and their defence for most parts was solid.
As the home side had a lighter pack it was always going to be a tough day scrummaging, but Stevie Hicks did a great job collecting any scrappy ball behind a retreating pack.
Basingstoke captain Rob Northcote said: “This week was one of frustration but also positivity. I’m positive because all of the fixable elements are well within our ability and I’m positive because I know we’ve got the right people to do this.
“Week in and week out as a team we are determined to improve and the players are trying their hardest for the club.”
