BASINGSTOKE RFC go in search of their first league double of the season as they travel to Twickenham for a crunch London One South clash.

When these sides met earlier in the season, ’Stoke edged a thrilling match at Down Grange 29-28.

The home side trailed 11-0 early on, but they stormed back thanks to a hat-trick of tries from Matt Guilfoyle, a score from Matt Woodhouse and a penalty-try that put them 29-23 ahead with just minutes left in the game.

Twickenham scored a try, but then Simon Bundy kicked the conversion wide of the posts to give ’Stoke a memorable victory – their last one on home soil.

A repeat performance would be a great tonic for ‘Stoke and also snap their eight-game losing streak.

It would also be a great way to erase memories of their last outing, which saw them lose 104-0 at home to Havant.

Basingstoke have won just once since the turn of the year, while Twickenham have managed just two wins, both at home, against Brighton and Havant last month.

Since then, the south west London club have lost at leaders Wimbledon and promotion-chasing Sutton.

’Stoke have injury doubts over prop Sam Turner and hooker Aaron Palmer, although winger Matt Woodhouse is set to return.

Chairman of playing Steve Parker said: “I don’t want the players to worry about the league.

“I want them to just go out and express themselves.

“I want us to focus on what we do and it would be nice to get some luck as we are getting nothing at the moment.”

He added: “It would also be nice to score some points as the guys deserve it for all the effort they are putting in on game day and in training.

“We have four games left to build new partnerships ahead of next season.”

Sadly, the writing looks on the wall for 'Stoke as they try to avoid relegation.

There are five teams at the moment in danger of dropping through the trapdoor – with three of them sure to go – and bottom side ’Stoke are one of the prime candidates.

They are 13 points away from safety, but still have 20 points to play for, starting with a trip to fellow strugglers Twickenham this Saturday.

They then face a tough home game against promotion-chasing Sutton & Epsom before an even more daunting away trip to league leaders Wimbledon.

They wrap up the campaign with a trip to Kent to face Dover, who are fourth from bottom at the moment.

Hove, until recently, had spent the whole of the campaign at the bottom of the pile. They now have a six-point advantage over Basingstoke and are eight points away from safety.

The Sussex side have beaten Basingstoke and Twickenham in recent weeks and this weekend they would love to make it a hat-trick of home wins when Guildford are the visitors.

A big game at Cobham follows the week after, before they finish with a home game against Chobham and a trip to Gosport and Fareham.

’Stoke’s opponents on Saturday, Twickenham, occupy the final relegation spot, but they are snapping at the heels of Cobham, who are five points above them, and Dover, who are six ahead.

The London side seem to have their fate very much in their own hands as they face three sides in the bottom five in their last four games.

After this weekend’s visit from Basingstoke, they travel to Dover, before a home game with mid-table Guildford.

It could all come down to the final weekend, when they travel to Cobham.

Surrey side Cobham are just above the drop zone, but they have won three of their last six games, including a victory at mid-table Brighton.

Their two home games against Hove and Twickenham look vital to their survival, while they have away trips to Charlton Park and Havant.

Dover have a vital home game against Twickenham, while ’Stoke make the long trip to Kent on the final day of the season.

Dover also travel to Havant and face a tough trip to Sutton.
