THE Basingstoke Bluefins are all kitted out for their inaugural swim camp, which is to be held in Cyprus, thanks to sponsorship from EMS Cargo.

The funding has enabled the club to buy hoodies and T-shirts for their trip to their training camp.

EMS Cargo was established in 1977 and is a privately-owned nationwide freight forwarder. It has linked up with the club, which is based at Basingstoke Aquadrome.

Richard Moyihan, EMS Cargo’s operations manager, said: “Graeme, the son of the manager of our London Heathrow office, Martin Richardson, is part of the Bluefins Swimming Club and was asked to swim at the Bluefins’ inaugural swim camp in Cyprus.

“When the opportunity arose to provide sponsorship, Martin approached the directors of EMS Cargo as he knew EMS had a long history of supporting local charities.

“We recognise the value of youngsters taking part in sports of all types, and we were only too pleased to support this cause. We wish the Bluefins every success now and in the future.”

In total, 22 swimmers from the club’s top two squads, as well as two coaches, will spend a week in Coral Bay, Cyprus for a warm-weather training camp.

The swimmers will have two, two-hour training sessions a day in the 50m pool that was used by the Great Britain squad ahead of the Athens Olympics.

In their last event before Cyprus, the Bluefins travelled for a one-day meet at the City of Southampton.

Top performers were Molly Goffin with two golds, a silver and two bronze medals. Amelia Trist collected a gold, two silvers and two bronze medals.

Alfie Evans went home with a medal of each colour, while Aemilia Rugman and Finlay Evans collected gold and silver.

At the same meet, Rugman broke her existing club records for the 50 metres and 100m breaststroke and also achieved the regional qualification time for the 100 metres.

Bluefins swimmers also enjoyed success at the South East Regional Long Course Championships, held in Crawley, as they picked up 16 titles.

The highlight of the weekend was from the newly-formed 200 years men’s relay team, consisting of Spencer Turner, Dave Milburn, Steve Greenfield and Fernando Vicario.

They took part in the 200 metres freestyle relay and finished four seconds ahead of their entry time, smashing the regional record by over six seconds. They were just 1.5 seconds outside the British record.

Individually, Emma Oliver had a great meet, with victories in the 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke.

The other Bluefin winners at Crawley and their events were as follows: Tony Scott (200m butterfly), Fleur Parker (50m freestyle), Ian Cameron (200m individual medley), Spencer Turner (200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke), Steve Greenfield (100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke).
