GAVIN Dampies scored a hat-trick of tries, as Basingstoke RFC beat Cobham 34-12, to maintain their 100 per cent home record in London One South.

The speedy winger took just nine minutes to open his account, after Ben Stewart found Callum Staff, and he off loaded to Dampies, who ran around under the posts.

Guy Wilkinson made no mistake with the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

The home side dominated the opening 40 minutes, as Cobham found it hard to make any erodes into the ’Stoke half.

So it was no surprise, when the lead was doubled after 20 minutes.

This was after another good move, which saw Matt Guilfoyle break the visitors defence.

A lovely reverse pass found Jobi Kochanowski and he fed Dampies.

He went in under the posts once again and Wilkinson then added the extras.

The home side kept up the pressure, running the ball whenever they could and forced a penalty.

Wilkinson maintained his 100 per cent record for the day with the boot, from 25 metres out to make it 17-0.

Then on the 31 minute mark, ’Stoke were awarded another penalty, just inside the Cobham half, this time replacement Ryan Trevaskis was given the job of adding three more points and was successful.

The same player was called upon three minutes later, for another penalty from 25 metres, but this time he put the kick wide of the posts, so ’Stoke had to settle for a 20-0 lead at the break.

The home side started the better, after the interval and when Cobham tried to kick to clear their lines, the ball was caught by Trevaskis.

He surged forward and after a good run from Tim Richards he handed the ball inside for Kochanowski to score.

Trevaskis kicked the conversion for a 27-0 lead and it looked like the home side would pile up the points from there.

However, it was not to be as the visitors came back into the game, and on 57 minutes got themselves on the scoreboard as Dave Mills scored and Tim Green converted.

Cobham now had the upper hand and despite some solid defending at the game line, the visitors added another five points from Rory Lorimer and then Green missed the extras.

After this the Surrey were unable to add any more points, and it was fitting that Dampies with his hat-trick try in the corner sealed the win and with it the home side also collected the bonus point try.

Even from right out on the touchline, Trevaskis added the conversion to complete a 34-12 victory.

This Saturday, ’Stoke are away at Chobham, who have won their first three games of the season and lie second in the table, three places above ’Stoke.
