TEENAGE track sensation Owen Richardson will travel to Sheffield this weekend for the British Indoor Athletics Championships.

The 18-year-old will be running in the 400 metres and is currently ranked the top under-20 in Britain at this event.

Richardson attends Sherfield School on a scholarship and is looking forward to the experience of the senior championship.

If all goes to plan he hopes to make the final on Sunday, but first he has to qualify from first round heats and semi-finals which will be on Saturday.

Richardson said: “It is going to be a good experience and indoors 400 metres are a lot more tactical than outside.

“I feel good shape at the moment and if I do well I could make the relay team for the European Championships.”

This would see him being part of the Great Britain team which will travel to Serbia in the first week of March.

Richardson trains five days a week, as well time in the gym and hill work.

The teenage also trains on the track with his home town club Basingstoke and Mid Hants.

He is certainly in good form coming into the event after winning the South of England Championships at Lee Valley last month.

The 18-year-old coming home in a time of 48.45 seconds which saw him retain his title.

He also won the 400 metres as part of the England senior team in Bratislava.

He dominated the race from start to finish, coming home in a time of 48.69 seconds.

Richardson thanked Sherfield School for their help in his career and said: “They are really supportive with my training schedule and when I need to go away for competitions. ”
