HOME athlete Maddie Deadman claimed a place on the podium as Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletic Club hosted the third match of the Destination Basingstoke Hampshire Cross Country League season.

The event was held at Popham Airfield on Saturday, with almost 700 runners taking part.

Running in the under-15 girls’ race over 4km, Deadman was among the leaders throughout, eventually finishing third behind Josie Czura (Portsmouth) and Grace Copeland (Wimbourne). Another Basingstoke runner, Rebecca Poole, finished seventh, while Rebecca Bullock’s 17th place helped the team to finish third.

Freya Davis put in an impressive display in the 6km senior women’s race, finishing fifth overall and third in the under-20 category. Angela Goodwin was the sixth veteran home in 19th place overall, while Jenny Helyar and Gemma Bigg were eighth and 10th respectively in the under-20 race.

Basingstoke finished fourth in the team event.

Dave Ragan was the best Basingstoke runner in the 10km senior men’s race, coming home ninth, two places ahead of clubmate Tom Sycklemore.

Overton Harriers’ James Knight was second in the veteran category, with Basingstoke’s Alex Hamilton fourth and Sean Holmes, another Overton runner, 10th.

James Beeks was 13th in the under-17 men’s race, while Harry Richardson finished 20th in the under-15 race.
