Basingstoke and Mid Hants’ Jermaine Mays claimed victory at the second Hampshire Cross Country League match of the season.
The Down Grange runner held off the challenge of Winchester’s Toby Lambert during a thrilling sprint finish, with both runners finishing in the same time, almost 20 seconds clear of the third-placed runner.
The result leaves Mays second in the individual standings, while the Basingstoke team claimed second place on the day.
Alex Hamilton also impressed, finishing second in the veterans race. Overton Harriers’ Sean Holmes was fourth, with Basingstoke’s Matt Shaylor ninth.
Lucy Wildash impressed in the women’s race, finishing 13th overall and sixth in the under-20 class. Angela Goodwin was the eighth veteran woman home, one place clear of Overton’s Cath Wheeler.
Maddie Deadman’s good form continued as she made it two second-place finishes from two races in the under-15 class. Club-mate Rebecca Bullock was sixth.
