WHITCHURCH sprinter Moira West is celebrating after breaking a national record.

The Overton Harrier represented the south at an inter-area challenge match in Solihull at the weekend, becoming the fastest British woman over the age of 65 for the 400m.

West, who is 65, clocked 73.48sec to set a new national record, making the hard work she has been doing in training seem more than worthwhile.

“I was delighted to break the British record,” she said. “I hate running 400m the most, so it’s been a couple of years since I ran it, but my times have been coming down and it was great to get below 74 seconds and break the British record.”

West is looking forward to a busy August, with the British Championships followed by a trip to Turkey for the Europeans, where she plans to run the 100m, 200m and 400m.

“I am aiming to run even quicker over the next month,” she added. “I’m still up there with my personal bests for most events and I really want to get a medal at the European Championships.”
