Basingstoke and Mid Hants youngster Brendan O’Connor will represent Ireland later this month after finishing third at the Ireland Under-19 Cross Country Championships, which took place in Waterford in December.
While O’Connor was bagging his podium finish, several of his club-mates travelled to Biggleswade, in Bedfordshire, where they represented Hampshire at the South of England Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships.
The top Basingstoke performance came from Rebecca Poole, who finished sixth in the under-13 race and helped Hamp-shire to a silver medal in the team competition.
Ollie Butler also picked up a medal, his 19th place in the under-17 event helping the county to a bronze medal.
Lucy Wildash was 15th in the under-15 race despite a bout of food poisoning.
Poole’s impressive weekend continued in a Border Cross Country League meeting at Guildford on Sunday.
The Basingstoke runner won the under-15 girls race convincingly to make it two wins out of two in that competition.
Teammate Zoe Frost was third in the same race, while Harry Richardson and James Underwood also picked up third-place finishes.
