Young boxer excels in first bout

HISTORY was made for Basingstoke Boxing Club last Saturday as 19-year-old Hannah Latonero became the club’s first ever female boxer.
She travelled to Welwyn Garden City to take on local fighter Jade Phypers over three rounds.
The teenager, who only took up the sport eight months ago, has proved to be a quick learner and trains four times a week at the Essex Road gym. In contrast Phypers had already boxed once before, so had a small advantage in experience.
The first round saw the confident Phypers press forward throwing lots of punches, which Latonero covered up and took on her arms before firing back with jabs and solid right hands.
The second round was more of the same, non stop action as both girls worked hard for the win.
By the third round, the Basingstoke fighter’s punches caused a nosebleed to Phypers, which the ref took to the corner to clean up. When the boxing continued it was all action to the final bell.
It was Latonero who won the fight as two of the three scoring judges gave her the decision.
