Whitchurch claim big away win
1:00pm Friday 5th October 2012 in Sport By Graham Merry
Paul Coventry starred for Whitchurch in their victory at East Cowes.
PAUL Coventry was the star of the show as he scored twice as Whitchurch win 3-1 at East Cowes Vics in the Wessex League division one last Saturday.
Visiting boss Jim Macey decided to gamble going with three forwards and it proved a master stroke as his side dominated the game from start to finish.
After Coventry and Luke Walker had early chances, Coventry who was thorn in the side of the island side all day, was elbowed in the face, the home player escaping with a just a talking to.
The Whitchurch took over his revenge in the best possible way as he opened the scoring.
Grant Powell playing his first 90 minutes in a long time was then pulled back when through one-on-one with the home goalie and amazingly the visitors appeals for a penalty were waved away.
After the break a great ball from Jordan Seaward was hit first time by Coventry and it flew into the net like a bullet.
East Cowes responded with a well taken free-kick, but a surging run from Powell coming from the midfield saw him fire home from 25 yards to make sure of the victory.
Whitchurch manager Jim Macey said: “They just could not cope with Paul Coventry they found him unplayable. It was a great win and winning always make the trip back from there so much nicer.”
This Saturday, ’Church are at home to Pewsey Vale and expect Tom Pemberton, Pa Touray and Jon Rimmer to return to the squad.
