Basingstoke's Cleverley stars as GB progress

BASINGSTOKE-BORN midfielder Tom Cleverley had another good game as Great Britain progressed to the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament.

The Manchester United man was a solid performer in the British midfield as the hosts beat Uruguay 1-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Wednesday night.

Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game just before half-time, while Cleverley made sure that GB did not miss captain Ryan Giggs, who was rested.

The result means that the hosts top Pool A and sets up a return trip to Cardiff for a quarter-final tie against Korea on Saturday night (kick-off 7.30pm).
