Will fires Hartley to Guy Jewell final win

A SUPERB 64 from Hartley Wintney’s opening batsman Will Phillips laid the foundation for a 23-run victory over Hook and Newnham Basics in the Guy Jewell Cup last Sunday.

A big crowd descended on the May's Bounty for the game and it was the underdogs that took the trophy for the second year running as Hartley beat their Southern League rivals.

Having been put into bat, it was Phillips and Scott Baldwin (26) with a third wicket stand of 66 who were the backbone of Hartley’s winning score of 125-6.

The pair had even been forced to come off as rain swept across the ground, forcing a 15 minute delay with them 44-1 after eight overs.

The 13th over, the first bowled by Richard Willcock (3-16), proved unlucky for Baldwin as his superb supporting innings came to an end thanks to a Jordan Hobday catch.

The Hook bowler’s next six balls proved just as eventful as Phillips hit him over the wall by the scorebox for six, before Willcock produced a smart caught and bowled to dismiss Jamie Teale.

Phillips then hit a straight six off Kevin Poulter to bring up the three figures for his side, but in the following over the innings of the winner of the Rita Thompson Memorial Cup (man-of-the-match) came to an end as he was stumped by Josh Buckingham.

After that it was left to Ben House and captain Jack Cockram to add a quick runs to move the total to 125-6.

As in the Southern Electric Cup final at the Rose Bowl, Hook looked to have done a good job and set about the chase, but were soon in trouble as Cockram (2-21) trapped Ben Thane leg before and then a great Cockram catch ended Hobday's innings to give Baldwin his first of two wickets, leaving Hook reeling at 17-2.

Cockram and Baldwin continued to turn the screw as Hook managed just 21 off the first six overs.

Further wickets fell and it was left to Ben Allnutt (29), the best Hook batsman, and Matt McNally (15) to try and get their side back into the game.

They did for a while, before Phil Horwood (3-17) bowled McNally and Joe Allnutt in consecutive balls with Buckingham steering away the hat-trick ball off his legs.

He also ended the innings of Ben Allnutt, which included five fours, as he went for a big hit down the ground, but Baldwin, sliding on his knees, took the catch.

His departure ended Hook’s hopes as they eventually ended on 102-9.

A delighted winning captain Cockram said: “I didn’t think it would be a high scoring game due to the conditions and I was happy with 125 to bowl at. For me our man-of-the-match was Phil Horwood as his wickets in the middle of the innings took the game away from them.”

Losing skipper Thane said: “I felt we bowled and fielded well, but our batting has let us down.”

After the match, the Mary Jewell Cup for the best batsman in the tournament went to Hook’s Thane. The Guy Jewell Trophy for bowling went to Hartley’s Chris Jolley.
