Tobin aiming to go one better

OLD Basing sprinter Robert Tobin will be going for gold in the 4x400m relay at the European Championships this weekend.

The 26-year-old was a member of the Great Britain team that won silver at the World Championships last year - and he is hoping to go one better in Barcelona.

“Making the relay team was one of my main aims for the season because that was something I really wanted to be involved in,” Tobin said. “Some of the top 400m runners in Europe are British so it is quite tough to make the team and we should have a good chance.”

A gold medal would certainly make up for the disappointment Tobin felt at failing to qualify for the individual 400m.

That honour went to Martyn Rooney, Michael Bingham and Conrad Williams, who are all in the relay squad along with Tobin, Richard Buck, Graham Hedman and Andrew Steele.

The heats of the 4x400m take place on Saturday morning, with the final due to get underway at 8.55pm the following day.

Britain were the top European team at the Worlds last year, finishing second behind the USA, and will be highly fancied to claim gold this weekend. However, they will face strong competition from Belgium, Poland and France, who all reached the final in Berlin, while Russia are traditionally strong when it comes to relay events.
