BASINGSTOKE’S newest boxer, Reece Baker, of South Ham, scored his third win in a row last weekend when he took on Fulham's Martel Hylton in Portsmouth.
It was another clear win for the promising 13-year-old, who only started training this season.
His first competitive victory was in May, against Hayden Askins of Ryde Boxing Club, followed by a win against Josh Bailey of Southampton’s Golden Ring, only three weeks later.
Rarely are lads ready to box after only a few months in the gym, but Baker’s dedication to training, and enthusiasm for boxing had seen him progress very quickly, and he is definitely one to watch out for.
Another fighter on the way up is Bryce Logan. The 19-year-old from Oakridge recently won the silver medal at the Haringey Boxcup at the Alexander Palace in London.
The Boxcup is a three-day event with clubs coming from as far away as Sweden, Norway and Africa to compete, and, as Logan had a busy middleweight group, it meant he would have to box on all three days.
His first fight was against the more experienced Jake Deer of Braintree, which he won clearly to set up a clash with the Lion Club’s Sylvester Brobby in the semi-final.
Another victory set up a clash with Bellahousten’s Ronnie Singh, who in a close contest just got the decision.
However, Logan did himself and the club proud, as not only was he the youngest in his group, but he was also also the least experienced. The result takes his season’s tally to seven wins from nine.
Basingstoke Boxing Club will be training throughout the summer at the Essex Road gym, ready for the new season in September.
