BASINGSTOKE under-16 Bison won a thrilling penalty shoot-out to win the recent Telford tournament, beating the host club in the final.

The young Herd looked on the way to defeat against their Shropshire rivals as they trailed 2-0.

However, Kurt Tyrell pulled a goal back and then, with 35 seconds left, the Bison pulled their netminder Connor Standing and Jesse Lye tied the game.

Overtime saw both sides score, Christian Rhodes getting the Basingstoke goal.

That meant the title was decided on a penalty shoot-out and the visiting shooters excelled as Lye, Ryan Sutton, Floyd Taylor and Jake Florey all scored in a 4-2 victory.

Before that all five teams in the competition – Telford, Basingstoke, Coventry, Oxford and Solihull – played each other twice in the round robin group stages.

The Bison won six of their games starting with a 4-1 success over Oxford as Taylor, Lye, Sutton and Teddy Brideson-Oates all found the net.

They then beat Solihull 4-0 with Taylor, Lye, Florey and Dan Murrells on target.

Their third game was against Telford and having led 2-0 they drew 2-2, as Hugh Tibbitts and Taylor netted.

A four-goal blitz from Taylor and one each from Tyrell and Rhodes saw them beat Coventry 6-0.

The Bison then faced Oxford, again winning 3-0, as Taylor, Sutton and Rhodes all scored.

A magnificent seven goals were then put past Solihull as Sutton and Taylor both scored braces, while Lye, Tyrell and Rhodes got singles.

The second meeting with Telford saw the Shropshire side win 2-1 as Taylor scored.

Basingstoke then made sure of their final appearance beating Coventry 3-1 as Taylor grabbed a hat-trick.
