FRANK Gray was pleased with the way his Basingstoke Town side played in the first half at Kingfield on Saturday – but was unable to hide his disappointment at losing to former club Woking.
Town dominated the opening period in Surrey on Saturday but found themselves 2-1 down after conceding spectacular goals in the first and last minutes of the half.
They were able to level shortly after the break but Woking were on top after that, running out 4-2 winners in the end.
“We played well for long periods in the first half, it was as well as we have done in a long time,” Town manager Gray said. “If you take the first and last 30 seconds of the half out, they barely had a kick.
“We started well in the second half and got on terms but they changed their shape to combat us and, to be fair, they were the better side after the break.
“Goals change games, though. We had a great chance to make it 3-2 when Robert Rice got in down the right but were not able to take advantage – and, minutes later, they went down the other end and we conceded a bad goal.
“When it was 2-2, we may have been too keen to get forward and win the game. What we needed to do was keep our shape and discipline.”
Gray added: “I am disappointed to lose, as coming back here for the first time, it was a game I really wanted to win.”
