THE BASINGSTOKE Bison made sure they are very much in the mix for third place in the English Premier League as the season enters its final weekend.
A superb double was completed over the Peterborough Phantoms at the weekend as after winning 5-1 on home ice, they recorded a 6-4 success in Cambridgeshire on Sunday night.
The result was even better when you consider the Herd were minus captain Nicky Chinn and suspended duo Chris Wiggins and Tom Long.
It was the home side who opened the scoring at 5:47 from Shaun Yardley, only for Ondrej Lauko to tie the game before the first buzzer.
The match was then won with a brilliant 4-0 second session as Shaun Thompson, Andy Hemmings, Lauko and Thompson all found the net forcing the Phantoms to replace starting netminder Stephen Wall with Damian King.
The Bison extended their lead to 6-1 thanks to Hemmings’ second of the night, before the Phantoms hit back from Maris Ziedins and James Morgan.
A shorthanded goal from Brent Gough narrowed the advantage to two goals with 2:18 left on the clock, but that was as close as the home side, got as Bison’s man-of-the-match Tom Annetts kept them at bay.
See Thursday’s Gazette for a full report and a preview of this weekend’s games away at Milton Keynes and at home to Swindon.
