Gray's home truths

1:00pm Monday 8th March 2010

FRANK Gray admitted that his Basingstoke Town side need to improve the way they start games after seeing them lose another early goal.

Having conceded in the opening stages of games against Weston-super-Mare and Newport County recently, Town found themselves a goal down after just four minutes against struggling Lewes on Saturday.

“It was disappointing to start the game badly again, giving away an early goal,” Gray said. “That is something we have got to get out of because if you give a goal away after three minutes, it puts you under pressure.”

Basingstoke hit back in the second half to claim a point but, other than that, offered little going forward during a turgid game.

“Apart from the goal and a couple of breaks, Ross Kitteridge did not have much to do, but we did not work their ’keeper enough either,” the Town manager admitted. “We pinned them back for long spells but it did not work out for us in front of goal.”

The state of the Camrose pitch certainly did not help Gray’s team – something that could pose them problems for the remainder of the season.

“The pitch is not the best and you have got to play a certain way on surfaces like that,” Gray added. “We are not a physical side and the players we have got prefer a perfect surface but unfortunately you cannot get that at this time of year.”
