READING manager Brian McDermott was delighted to see his side hang on to claim a second successive Championship victory at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
Goals from Shane Long and Brian Howard gave the Royals a cushion but they were made to sweat in the closing stages as Matt Mills was sent off for handball, with Doncaster converting the resulting penalty to make it 2-1.
A nervous last ten minutes ensued, with the home side hitting the crossbar and forcing Adam Federici into a couple of good saves, but Reading hung on to claim three vital points.
“It was a big win,” McDermott said. “The team were real warriors. I thought we were resilient. It was a terrific away performance.
“Off the back of the win we had over Barnsley last week, we had to follow that up. We’ve done that and I’m delighted.”
The win took Reading to within a point of climbing out of the drop zone and they face a relegation six-pointer tonight, when fellow strugglers Plymouth Argyle visit the Madejski Stadium (kick-off 8pm).
“We look forward to getting back and playing in front of our home fans,” McDermott added. “We’ve got a really exciting win behind us and now we have Plymouth on Tuesday and then West Brom in the cup. I can’t wait.”
