Drury aggrieved by late disallowed goal

WHITCHURCH boss Brian Drury could not believe his luck when Paul George’s equaliser was ruled out for offside in their 2-1 defeat at Fleet Spurs on Tuesday night.

Drury said: “There was definitely a defender and goalkeeper on the goalline. I know that because the defender fell over the goalie trying to clear the ball.”

The ‘Church manager was also disappointed to see another player leave the club in the past week as striker Pa Touray joined Hartley Wintney.

Drury said: “I don’t think that any club in the Wessex League has lost six of their first team players.

“I still have some good players at the club, but it is getting |increasing disappointing that this is happening.

“I felt we had built a really good team here and it was proved by our place in the table.”

On Tuesday night, Fleet Spurs had an early goal disallowed for offside and then Whitchurch’s Elliot Capel headed just over from a Luke Walker cross before Walker had a shot saved.

The visitors took the lead on 18 minutes, when Walker and Capel combined and the cross was deflected onto his own post by Dan Sleet, only for Alistair Brown to roll the ball in from a foot away.

Fleet equalised on 71 minutes from Adam Crittenden and the same player tucked away a |disputed penalty after a challenge from Douda Foufahna.

Then, deep into injury time, George had a shot scrambled away and from the corner he slid in a loose ball only to be pulled up for offside.

Last Wednesday, Whitchurch returned from Verwood with a good point after 0-0 draw – a result Drury felt was a fair one.

Goalkeeper Greg Wellman made two excellent saves to record a fine clean sheet.

‘Church now have a week off and will be back in action a week on Saturday at Downton in Wessex League division one.
