THE BASINGSTOKE under-16 Bison finished third in a tournament in Belgium which included teams from right across Europe and Canada.

The first part of the competition was a league of eight teams and the young Herd opened with a 1-1 draw against French side Caen Drakkers as captain Josh Galea scored, assisted by Cameron Wynn.

The next match saw Basingstoke beat the Hannover Indians 2-0 as Jessie Lye, the team’s top goal scorer, netted from Ben Price shorthanded.

Then Jake Florey finished a move involving Lye and Wynn to seal the victory.

The Bison suffered their first defeat, despite Lye opening the scoring after 77 seconds, as they went down 3-1 to the Amsterdam Tigers.

But the team bounced back in their next game, which they tied 2-2 with Quebec.

Ryan Sutton gave them the lead, before the Canadian side took a 2-1 advantage.

It was left to Florey, assisted by Michael Wakelin, to make sure honours were even.

In their next game against Finnish side Jukurit Knights Bison drew 1-1, with Galea netting another goal.

That was followed by a 1-1 draw with Jukurit Vikings as Wynn scored the lone Bison strike from Galea.

In their final league game Bison ended the host club’s 100 per cent record with a 2-2 draw with Leuven Chiefs, as Lye scored from Price and then Wynn equalised for a second time.

That set up a third and fourth play-off game with Jukurit Knight which saw the Bison win it 2-1.

Rob Tambellini assisted by Stuart Mogg scored the first goal and then Galea got the winner assisted by Wynn and Lye.
